january bookish wrap-up (books + movies + TV shows and other favourites!!)

Hey everyone!

For me, the start of 2022 has been a good one in terms of the books that I’ve read and the movies & tv shows/documentaries that I’ve watched. They have not been disappointing at all, I liked all of the books that I’ve read and added a lot of new books to my TBR. I tried to write today’s blog post in a “spotify wrapped” style. If you do not know what a spotify wrapped is, it is basically a summary of the songs and artists you’ve listened to, that is given to you at the end of each year via spotify (they also show you how many minutes/hours you’ve listened to songs and which genre(s) you’ve listened to, and I kept a record of that for the books too!). I have decided to do this at the end of each month and instead of only songs and artists, I listed my favourite books, movies, tv shows, and quotes of the month as well. I also added my February TBR at the end, so let me know if you want to buddy read any of those books in the comments section 🙂 Let’s get started!

Books of January:

(my detailed reviews of the books on goodreads are linked)

* The Spanish Love Deception– Elena Armas

* We Should All Be Feminists– Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

* A Thousand Boy Kisses– Tillie Cole

* Eleanor & Park– Rainbow Rowell

Favourite book of January:

Undoubtedly, A Thousand Boy Kisses was my favourite book of January and it is definitely guarding its place on my top 22 reads of 2022 list! This book wrapped my heart in a warm fuzzy blanket and then shattered it in pieces. Loved it.

Short reviews:

1) The Spanish Love Deception

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Although it was very long (would’ve been better if it had maximum 300 pages) and dragged on and on until the climax, I enjoyed it.

2) We Should All Be Feminists

Rating: 5 out of 5.

One of the best feminist books I’ve read and one of the most inspirational and motivational non-fiction books I’ve read in my life so far. This is a must read.

3) A Thousand Boy Kisses

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Probably the third book on my favourite books of all time list. (First two: Love and Other Words, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower). Please just stop everything, stop whatever you’re reading and read this book.

4) Eleanor & Park

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I was going to rate it 5 stars until I read some comments that suggested that the author was deeply offending people by the stereotypical and racist comments and the misused first name “Park” that is a popular Korean last name, which is a well-known fact. On the other hand, this book felt like home, I wish it wasn’t offensive to many people out there and I wish the author would address this issue.

Movies of January:

* Inception

Tv Shows of January:

* The Queen’s Gambit

Documentaries of January:

* Britney VS. Spears

* Creating The Queen’s Gambit

Songs that I’ve discovered in January:

* Exile- Taylor Swift & Bon Iver

* Looking for america- Lana Del Rey

Favourite quotes from the books I’ve read in January:

* -The Spanish Love Deception:

“We can break the rules. That’s the magic in being us, the ones making them.”

* -We Should All Be Feminists:

“Culture does not make people. People make culture. If it is true that the full humanity of women is not our culture, then we can and must make it our culture.”

* -A Thousand Boy Kisses:

“Because nothing so beautiful can last forever. She was a blossom petal, a butterfly, a shooting star…”

* -Eleanor & Park:

“She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.”
